General orders, 1779 October 27.

General orders given at Philadelphia, Penn. from the Commander-in-Chief, for the militia to follow until the arrival of the Count D'Estang, with whom they are to co-operate. Describes how the soldiers are to appear, and what they are to provide themselves. Lists supplies to be provided by the government, including rum, brown sugar, tea, soap, and tobacco, and salary to be paid to militia men. Commanding officers are named and included Colonel Bull as Adjutant-General, David Jackson as Quarter-master General, Doctor Hutchinson, surgeon and physician general, and James Searle, Mr. Shields, and Mr. Ingersoll as aides-de-camp.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
